Chestermere RCMP arrested a Calgary man on March 25, 2026, after officers interrupted a theft in the Kinniburgh Bay neighbourhood. While conducting early morning patrols, police discovered a man underneath a parked gold Honda CR-V attempting to remove its catalytic converter.
Officers arrested 44-year-old Jesse Tyson Otto at the scene. A second individual, who was acting as a lookout, fled on foot when police arrived. Despite a search involving a police dog service, that person remains at large. Police are asking anyone with information regarding the outstanding suspect to contact the Chestermere RCMP at 403-204-8777.
During the investigation, police searched a vehicle registered to the arrested man and found three stolen catalytic converters along with drug paraphernalia. Otto now faces several charges, including possession of break-in instruments, mischief to a vehicle under $5,000, and four counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000. He has been released from custody and is set to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice on June 2, 2026.
The incident highlights a growing issue in Alberta, where catalytic converter thefts have risen significantly in recent years. While provincial authorities have introduced measures to monitor metal sales, these parts remain frequent targets for thieves due to the valuable metals they contain. Staff Sgt. Kathy Klassen, who has led the detachment since 2022, said: “This is an excellent example of proactive police patrol leading to stop the property crime in process, the safe apprehension of the suspect and the recovery of stolen property. Our members remain committed to keeping our roads and community safe through diligent patrols and rapid response.”
