Residents in Chestermere, Alberta, are currently under mandatory Level 4 water restrictions that prohibit all outdoor water use. The measures began on March 9, 2026, and are expected to last for about four weeks while the City of Calgary performs maintenance on a major water pipe.
The restrictions apply to all households, businesses, and local schools connected to the municipal water system. According to the City of Chestermere, the rules are necessary to keep the regional water supply stable while the work is being finished.
The City of Calgary is currently reinforcing the Bearspaw South Feeder Main. This large pipe supplies water to several nearby communities, and crews are strengthening the most worn-out sections with concrete to prevent future pipe breaks.
Because Chestermere relies on Calgary for its treated water, any maintenance on this main pipe directly limits the amount of water available to the community. Local organizations, including Rocky View Schools, are also following the ban on outdoor water use to help conserve the supply.
Officials expect the outdoor water ban to stay in place until early April 2026. Residents are asked to stop all outdoor watering to ensure there is enough water available for essential indoor use and emergency services.
