Students in Chestermere have the chance to step into the shoes of local leadership this spring as the city opens applications for its annual Mayor for a Day program on April 1, 2026.
Organized by the Community Wellness Services Team, the initiative invites local students in Grades 7 through 12 to share their ideas on how to improve the community. To enter, participants must submit a written proposal answering a single question: if they were mayor for a day, what is one idea they would implement to improve the well-being of Chestermere residents?
Submissions will be accepted until May 15, 2026. Interested students can apply online through the city’s website, by emailing [email protected], or by dropping off their proposals in person at Chestermere City Hall, located at 105 Marina Road.
Following the submission deadline, city staff will review all entries and select five finalists for interviews held between May 21 and May 28. Mayor Shannon Dean will then choose the final winner, who will be contacted on June 3 and publicly announced on June 5, 2026.
The selected student will spend June 10, 2026, gaining a firsthand look at how the city operates. The day includes a mock inauguration ceremony, a tour of various municipal service buildings, and the opportunity to shadow Mayor Dean and meet with city councillors. This program builds on the success of the 2024 inaugural participant, who toured city facilities including the fire hall and public works department.
