Residents in Chestermere, Alberta, can get free help filing their taxes this month to ensure they receive all their government benefits. The Immigrant Education Society is hosting a free tax clinic at Camp Chestermere on March 28, 2026, from 10:30 AM to 3:30 PM.
The clinic is part of the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program, which uses trained volunteers to help people with simple tax situations. To qualify for the service, a single person must earn less than $40,000, while a family of four must earn less than $65,000. Volunteers are available to help residents in over 10 languages, including Arabic, French, Mandarin, and Punjabi.
This service is meant for straightforward tax filings and does not cover residents with rental income, capital gains, or those who have filed for bankruptcy in the tax year. It also cannot help with self-employment income, interest income over $1,000, or foreign properties. Last year, the society helped more than 1,400 people file their returns in just two months.
This year marks the 55th anniversary of the national volunteer tax program, which helped file over 1 million returns across Canada last year. The federal government recently renewed funding for the program for another three years to help community groups host these clinics. By removing the cost of hiring a professional, the clinic helps residents access the refunds they deserve.
