The province is putting $130,000 into Hillcrest Park to build a gazebo and put in playground equipment that works for kids of all abilities. The money, announced May 27, 2026, comes from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation and adds to years of local fundraising by the volunteer group Cochrane Park Pals.
“The Town of Cochrane is using NOHFC funding to construct a gazebo and install inclusive playground equipment. Once complete, Hillcrest Park will be an accessible, modern and safe recreational hub,” the province said in a statement.
The Park Pals started in April 2023 after the old playground was taken out in 2022 when it no longer met safety rules. They raised money for three years through community barbecues, holiday events, and donations from people, businesses, and local groups. In April 2026, town council approved a $158,711.34 bid from CRCS Recreation to put in the new equipment, with no tax dollars needed.
“The funds for the project were raised by the volunteer group Cochrane Park Pals over a three-year period through community fundraisers, direct donations from individuals, local philanthropic organizations, businesses and corporate contributions, along with support from project partners,” project backers said.
Mayor Peter Politis called the Park Pals “a shining example of grassroots leadership.” The group also got a boost in 2025 when Cochrane won Ontario’s Most Active Community in the ParticipACTION Community Challenge, directing the $7,500 prize to the playground.
