On March 5, 2026, the Colwood Council in British Columbia voted to move forward with the expansion of the West Shore Royal Canadian Mounted Police building. The project is now entering the detailed design phase to prepare for the growth of regional police services. This initiative is a partnership between the municipalities of Colwood, Langford, and View Royal.
The expansion is estimated to cost $103 million and represents a 25-year financial commitment from the partner municipalities. To fund the construction, the municipalities are working with the Capital Regional District, which will serve as the official authority for borrowing the necessary money. The project is designed to ensure the local police force has enough space to operate effectively as the region continues to grow.
To protect local taxpayers, the council put several safety measures in place to manage the project risks. These “guardrails” include a clear definition of the project scope, a formal process for making changes to the plan, and the engagement of a specialized Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) coach to facilitate the project. These steps are intended to prevent unexpected costs and keep the construction on track.
Colwood Mayor Doug Kobayashi said that the three municipalities share the goal of building a facility that supports vital police operations for the future. He added that the local governments are working together to make sure they make careful and informed financial decisions for the people they serve. The new building will be specifically designed to meet the long-term needs of the West Shore RCMP.
