The Capital Regional District was recognized with the 2025 Leader in Sustainability Award on March 4, 2026, for collecting more than 30,000 kilograms of used batteries across Colwood, British Columbia, and the surrounding region.
This recognition highlights the success of local programs that keep hazardous waste out of the Hartland Landfill. Residents helped reach this goal by recycling exactly 30,816 kilograms of batteries through regional collection sites.
The regional government credits the achievement to the use of tools like the RecycleCRD app and the MyRecyclopedia website, which help people find where to drop off old items. The collection effort is also supported by a partnership with Call2Recycle Canada to ensure the materials are handled safely.
This award marks a major milestone for environmental programs in the area. Local officials say the high volume of recycled batteries shows a strong commitment to keeping the community clean and managing waste effectively.
