Colwood families will have a direct say in who oversees local public schools when they cast ballots for school trustees on October 17, 2026.
The Sooke School District has posted information about the 2026 School Trustee Elections on the Colwood Elementary School website, reminding eligible voters that locally elected trustees are the voice of communities in public education.
“Democratically and locally elected school trustees are the voice of local communities in public education, setting direction for schools that shape the lives of all students and families in your area,” the notice states.
The election is part of British Columbia’s general local government elections, held every four years. The Sooke School District board has seven trustee positions, with four representing the Belmont Zone, which includes Colwood, Highlands, Langford, and Metchosin. Fourteen candidates are competing for those seven seats across the district.
This year’s vote comes after two trustees resigned earlier in 2026, leaving the board with five members. Under provincial rules, vacancies after January 1 in an election year can remain open until the general election, so no by-elections were held.
To vote, residents must be Canadian citizens, 18 or older on voting day, and qualify as a resident elector or non-resident property elector in the trustee electoral area. The City of Colwood assists in administering the election for school trustees alongside the municipal vote for mayor and council.
