The Friends of Colwood Parks nonprofit is inviting residents to help restore natural spaces in Colwood, British Columbia, through a series of weekend volunteer events starting March 29, 2026. These hands-on sessions will take place at Lagoon West Park, Royal Bay Painter Trail, and Colwood Creek Park to help native plants and trees thrive.
Volunteer events are held every Saturday and Sunday from 10 AM to 12 PM through May 23, 2026. Participants will help remove invasive species like Scotch broom and English holly, which often crowd out the local plants that regional wildlife depends on. No prior experience is needed to join the efforts, but residents are asked to bring their own work gloves to the sessions.
This community initiative is supported by the City of Colwood, which manages more than 50 parks and trails in the area. By removing invasive plants in the spring, volunteers can stop them from spreading seeds further into the environment. Groups like Broombusters and the Habitat Acquisition Trust also carry out similar work across Vancouver Island to protect local ecosystems.
One of the project sites, Colwood Creek Park, was established in the 1980s to protect the local watershed and old-growth forest. Another location, Lagoon West Park, is recognized as a culturally and archaeologically significant site for the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations. These restoration events offer a direct way for individuals and families to help keep these historic and environmental spaces healthy for the community.
