The Colwood Community Association is inviting residents to help remove invasive plants at Lagoon West Park in Colwood, British Columbia, on Sunday, March 29, 2026. This volunteer event aims to protect local wildlife by clearing out non-native species that crowd out natural greenery.
Volunteers are asked to meet in the parking lot of the Goldfinch Arts Centre at 170 Goldfinch Road starting at 10 AM. The cleanup will run until 12 PM and focus on removing problem plants like Himalayan blackberry and Scotch broom.
The park is located next to the Esquimalt Lagoon Migratory Bird Sanctuary, a 134-hectare area that has protected birds since 1931. The site is also culturally significant to the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations, the Lekwungen-speaking people whose ancestors held ceremonies and gatherings on this land.
This project follows previous community efforts, including a 2024 cleanup where 85 middle school students removed enough blackberry bushes to fill 45 bathtubs. Organizations like Green Teams Canada and the Habitat Acquisition Trust work regularly with the community to help keep local parks healthy.
