Residents across Mountain View School Division can soon put their names forward for a seat on the school board, with nominations opening for the October 28, 2026 school trustee election.
Candidates will be able to file nomination papers by appointment on September 16, 17, 18, 21 and 22 at the Mountain View School Division office in Dauphin, Manitoba. Interested applicants are asked to contact Senior Election Official Kirk Dawson at 204-621-7165 to book a time.
This year’s election is the first general vote since significant changes to the board, and all nine trustee positions are up for grabs. The division has also restructured its ward boundaries to reflect current populations, with four wards in place. Ward 1, covering Roblin and Grandview, will elect two trustees. Ward 2, which includes Ethelbert and Gilbert Plains, will elect one trustee. Ward 3, which covers areas outside Dauphin including Mossey River, will elect two trustees. Ward 4, the City of Dauphin, will elect four trustees.
People wanting to run must gather signatures from at least 25 eligible voters in their ward, or one per cent of ward voters, whichever is less, but in every case at least two signatures are required. The signed nomination papers must be submitted to the school division office during the nomination window.
The election comes after a period of upheaval for the school board, which oversees about 3,000 students in 16 schools across the Parkland region. In 2024, three trustees resigned and a superintendent was fired following public controversy, and a by-election brought four new trustees to the table, three of whom identified as Indigenous. Voter turnout in that by-election was roughly double the typical rate for school board votes.
