The 50th annual Percy DeWolfe Memorial Mail Race officially began in Dawson City, Yukon, on March 5, 2026. Mushers and their dog teams are currently traveling an approximately 210-mile route along the Yukon River to celebrate the region’s heritage of dog-powered travel. This milestone event attracts participants and visitors from across the north to witness the endurance required for winter racing.
The race trail follows the historic paths between Dawson City and Eagle, Alaska, before returning to the finish line. According to Yukon Info, the trip covers about 210 miles of challenging terrain. Mushers must navigate difficult sub-arctic conditions that test the strength of both the drivers and their dog teams.
One of the most unique parts of the event is the ceremonial mail handover. The first musher to leave the starting line carries an official bag of mail to Eagle, a task often overseen by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. This tradition serves as a living history exhibit of the mail routes that once sustained northern communities before modern roads or airplanes existed.
Local residents started the race in 1977 to honour the legacy of Percy DeWolfe, a legendary mail carrier known as the “Iron Man of the North.” DeWolfe delivered mail in the region from 1910 to 1949 using dogsleds, horses, and boats. His career spanned nearly 40 years of service regardless of the extreme weather or difficult trail conditions.
The Dog Powered Sports Club organizes the race each year to keep these local traditions alive for the community. This year’s 50th anniversary is a major event that highlights the town’s heritage and attracts many visitors.
