The Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Government is warning Dawson City residents about a phone scam where callers pretend to be from Northwestel TV Services to steal personal information.
The scammers are asking for credit card details, banking information, passwords, and personal identification. The First Nation government says anyone who gets an unsolicited call claiming to be from Northwestel should hang up right away and call the company back using a phone number they know is real.
This is not the first time scammers have targeted Dawson City. Phone and email scams impersonating Northwestel have been happening since at least 2011, including phishing emails that reached local residents in 2020 and 2022.
Northwestel has long said it will never ask for personal information, passwords, or banking details over the phone or by email. Company spokesperson Emily Younker has previously told customers that Northwestel “never solicits personal information, passwords or banking information by email or telephone.”
Residents who think they may have been targeted can report the scam to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or online.
