Dawson City, Yukon, is putting out a call for volunteers to help run this year’s Discovery Days celebration, set for August 14 to 17. The City of Dawson Parks and Recreation Department is looking for community organizers and helpers for the four-day festival, a longstanding community tradition in the territory.
Discovery Days marks the August 16, 1896 find of gold at Bonanza Creek by Shaaw Tláa (Kate Carmack), George Carmack, Skookum Jim Mason, and Tagish Charlie, a discovery that sparked the Klondike Gold Rush. The holiday was made official in 1911 and is now observed on the third Monday of August each year.
The festival runs across multiple venues in town and typically includes a parade, fastball and golf tournaments, a horticultural exhibition, live music, and an arts festival. It is organized by the City of Dawson alongside the Klondike Visitors Association, with support from the Dawson City Museum, the Yukon Order of Pioneers, and other community groups.
