The Yukon government has launched a new program to help residents manage the costs of essential health supplies, making specific diabetes medications and contraceptives available at little to no cost as of April 15, 2026. This initiative is expected to provide significant relief to families in Dawson City, where prescription expenses have historically created barriers to accessing necessary care for chronic conditions.
The Government of Yukon is partnering with Pacific Blue Cross to manage the program. When residents visit a pharmacy, their claims will be processed instantly. This new service acts as the primary payer for these medications, even for residents who already have their own private health insurance plans.
Federal Minister of Health Marjorie Michel noted that many residents across the territory are currently feeling the pressure of daily expenses. This program is designed to remove the financial worry that often accompanies the need for regular diabetes and contraceptive prescriptions.
For residents in Dawson City, these services are accessible through the local telepharmacy, Pharmasave, located at 501 Sixth Avenue. The program is supported by a 9.5 million dollar funding agreement signed by the Government of Canada in March 2025, following the passage of the federal Pharmacare Act in 2024.
The Yukon is currently one of four provinces and territories to join this initial phase of the national program, alongside British Columbia, Manitoba, and Prince Edward Island.
