The Town of Didsbury is dealing with road damage and construction delays after heavy rainfall pounded the region, forcing the closure of some local roads while crews work to make repairs.
Public works crews are out clearing loose gravel and smoothing deep ruts that formed on many local roads as record-breaking June rains saturated the ground. Town of Didsbury officials say some roads are closed because of weather-related conditions, while key access points remain open.
The damage comes after an unusually wet June across central Alberta. Environment Canada data shows the Edmonton area received 262 millimetres of rain by June 28, shattering a century-old record. That same soggy weather pattern left Didsbury’s roads soft and easily rutted, particularly where ongoing construction work is underway.
Some of that construction is tied to a $7.4 million water reservoir project next to the Didsbury Memorial Complex. Road work related to the new waterline connections is expected to continue until late 2026. The Town maintains about 75 kilometres of roads under its care, according to its public works page.
Residents are reminded to watch for signage indicating street sweeping in their neighbourhood. The Town also asks people not to leave junk at clothing donation bins, a problem that has been reported in other Alberta communities. Charities can be left with costly cleanup when furniture, garbage, or other unwanted items are dumped at bin sites.
