Families in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, will soon have access to more childcare options as BGC Fort Saskatchewan prepares to break ground on an expansion that will create 124 new licensed spaces for children aged 3, 4, and 5.
The $3.3 million project, funded by a grant from the Government of Alberta’s Building Blocks Capital Grant Program through the Canada-Alberta Early Learning and Childcare Infrastructure Funding Agreement, will be built on the east side of the organization’s existing clubhouse.
In addition to the government grant, the project has received $400,000 in support from four local industry partners: Inter Pipeline, Shell Canada, Dow, and Pembina Pipeline Corporation. Each company contributed $100,000 toward the development.
According to BGC Fort Saskatchewan Executive Director Debra Colarosa, the expansion is a significant step toward supporting more local families. The organization, which has served the community for 40 years, currently supports more than 1,400 children and youth annually but has faced persistent waitlists for its childcare programs.
Construction is expected to begin in June 2026, with the new spaces slated for completion by March 2027. The project design is led by architect Todd Voshell of Voshell Architecture and Design, with project management provided by Stefan van den Berg of Fidelis Advisory Group.
