The City of Fort Saskatchewan is asking for feedback from condo and apartment property managers, building owners, and condo board members to help shape a planned organics collection program for multi-family buildings. The city aims to explore this service to help divert food and yard waste from local landfills.
While single-family homes in the city currently have access to green cart organics collection, residents in multi-unit properties are not yet included in the service. The initiative is a significant step toward expanding waste diversion options for the community, which saw its population reach 30,575 in 2025.
Stakeholders are invited to share their input through an online survey available at mysay.fortsask.ca. The city is using this feedback to determine how to best implement organic waste collection for residents living in apartments and condos. Those with questions regarding the upcoming program can also reach out to the city’s Waste Services team at 780-992-6218.
This push to expand service to multi-family dwellings aligns with broader waste management changes across Alberta. For example, the provincial Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program is set to expand recycling services to multi-family buildings on October 1, 2026. Nearby, the City of Edmonton is currently in the middle of its own rollout, which will bring food scraps and recycling collection to all apartments and condos by the end of 2027.
