The Gimli Yacht Club is preparing for a busy summer on Lake Winnipeg, with a full calendar of racing and social events planned from June through September 2026. Residents and sailing enthusiasts can participate in a variety of activities at the facility, which serves as a central hub for the sport in Manitoba.
The season features a series of competitive sailing events, including the traditional season-ending Commodore’s Cup. Donated by Dan Snidal in 1970, the event is held over the September long weekend. The club will also host a high-performance training camp in July as part of its role in the National Training Centre – Prairie Region, which was established at the location in 2024 to support athlete development.
Community members are also invited to join the Save the Lake initiative, a partnership between the yacht club and the Kiwanis Club of Gimli & District. This effort focuses on protecting the health of Lake Winnipeg, which faces ongoing challenges from blue-green algae blooms linked to phosphorus levels. Over the past four years, this collaboration has raised more than $40,000 to support research and advocacy for the lake.
Established in 1969, the Gimli Yacht Club has a long history of supporting major events, having previously hosted sailing competitions for the Pan American Games and the 2017 Canada Summer Games. Current Commodore Mike Guezen leads the organization, which continues to promote the sport on the waters often referred to as the Prairie Ocean.
