A heat warning is in effect for Gimli and the surrounding area this week, with Environment Canada warning that hot and humid conditions will last for several days. The warning covers the Rural Municipality of Gimli, including Winnipeg Beach and Arnes, and took effect early Tuesday morning, July 28, 2026.
Daytime temperatures are expected to climb to the low 30s, but it will feel much hotter. The humidex is forecast to reach 40 on Tuesday and 41 on Wednesday, which is expected to be the hottest day. Overnight lows will only drop to the upper teens, offering little relief from the heat.
This kind of prolonged heat can be dangerous, especially for Gimli’s many older residents. About 37 percent of the local population is aged 65 and over. Environment Canada reminds everyone that heat-related health risks are highest for seniors, young children, pregnant people, and those with ongoing health problems.
Residents are urged to drink plenty of water, stay in cool places, and check on neighbours and family members who may be more vulnerable. Never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle. For anyone needing heat-related health advice, Manitoba Health, Seniors and Long-Term Care runs Health Links-Info Santé, which can be reached at 204-788-8200 or toll-free at 1-888-315-9257.
This is the second major heat event in Gimli this summer. On July 12, the community tied a daily temperature record set back in 1955 when the mercury hit 33.9 C. With more hot days ahead, taking simple precautions can help everyone stay safe until the heat breaks later in the week.
