Starting March 30, 2026, a busy stretch of Wyndham Street in Guelph, Ontario, will close to all vehicles as the city begins a project to fix aging pipes and refresh the downtown area. This first phase of work will focus on the road between Wellington Street East and the area just south of Macdonell Street.
The City of Guelph hired Steed and Evans Ltd. for $24 million to complete this portion of the project. Crews will replace sewers and watermains that are over 100 years old to ensure they stay reliable for local residents and businesses.
Drivers and bus riders should plan for extra travel time because of detours. Several Guelph Transit routes will be moved, including routes 3, 4, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, and 20. Some bus stops along Wyndham Street will be removed or moved to new spots during the work.
While the road is closed to cars, sidewalks will stay open so people can still visit local shops, which will remain open and accessible. The stretch of Wyndham Street from Wellington Street East to Carden Street is expected to open again for drivers by the end of July 2026.
Mayor Cam Guthrie called the project a major milestone that will make the downtown more accessible and livable. Residents can learn more about the plans at a Construction Information Fair at Guelph City Hall on March 25, 2026, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
