The Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority has issued a flood watch for Hanover and the surrounding area, warning residents to stay clear of local rivers and streams due to rising water levels and dangerous conditions. The alert, which is in effect until April 6, 2026, follows heavy rainfall that has saturated the ground and caused significant runoff into local waterways.
Local officials are urging families to keep children and pets away from all rivers and streams. The water is currently very cold and fast-moving, and the banks of these waterways are slippery and unstable. These conditions pose a serious safety risk for anyone walking near the water.
The warning is particularly relevant for those visiting Hanover Town Park, which is situated directly along the Saugeen River. The park features an 11-kilometre trail system and serves as a popular access point for canoeists. Because of the park’s proximity to the river, visitors should exercise extra caution until the water levels recede.
According to Environment Canada, additional rainfall is expected throughout the week. This forecast suggests that water levels will remain high into early next week. While authorities do not anticipate major flooding at this time, some low-lying areas may experience pooling water.
The conservation authority, which tracks water levels and weather data to protect the community, encourages residents to report any flooding online at saugeenconservation.ca/reportflood.
