The Town of Hanover is reminding local pet owners that all cats 8 months of age or older must be registered with the municipality. This one-time registration process is part of the town’s efforts to promote responsible pet ownership and ensure compliance with local rules regarding animal care.
To register a cat, owners must visit the Hanover Civic Centre located at 341 10th Street or call 519-364-2780. During the process, residents are required to provide proof of a current rabies vaccination. Under provincial Regulation 567 of the Health Protection and Promotion Act, all cats, dogs, and ferrets in Ontario over 3 months old must be kept up-to-date on rabies vaccinations.
Registration fees for 2026 are set at $34 for spayed or neutered cats and $45 for unspayed or unneutered cats, as outlined in the 2026 Rates and Fees document. Once registered, the cat must either be tattooed with its registration number by a veterinarian or wear a collar with a town-issued tag. If a tag is lost, a replacement can be purchased for $11.50.
In addition to registration requirements, the town’s Animal Control and Responsible Ownership By-law prohibits cats from running at large on public or private property other than their owner’s. Households are also limited to a maximum of three cats. These regulations are in place to help manage local pet populations and assist in the recovery of lost animals.
Further information regarding permits and licensing can be found on the Town of Hanover website. Residents can also find more details on pet health standards through the Government of Ontario.
