Residents in Hay River, Northwest Territories, are facing an increased risk of frostbite as extreme cold temperatures move through the area on March 9, 2026. The national weather agency warns that these conditions will create dangerous wind chills through the night.
According to Environment Canada, wind chill values are expected to reach as low as -38 overnight. The daytime high for Monday is forecast at -22°C, with the temperature expected to drop to a low of -29°C after sunset.
These temperatures are significantly colder than what is normal for the community at this time of year. Usually, Hay River sees daily highs of -10°C and overnight lows of -22°C during the early part of March.
With the wind chill hitting -31 in the evening and dropping further overnight, there is a high risk of skin freezing. Local residents are encouraged to dress in layers and monitor weather updates as the cold persists into the middle of the week.
