Housing Northwest Territories awarded a contract on March 5, 2026, to build a new 30-unit apartment building for single residents in Hay River, Northwest Territories. This project aims to provide modern, affordable homes and replace an aging 28-unit social housing complex that is currently in use.
The contract, valued at approximately $17.9 million, was awarded to Northern Industrial Construction Ltd. and features a design by Taylor Architecture Group. The new facility will include 10 units specifically designed to be accessible for people with physical challenges, and the entire building will meet updated standards for saving energy and withstanding local weather.
Community safety is a focus for the new development, with the building design including features intended to improve security for all residents. Construction on the project is expected to begin in the summer of 2026.
This project is part of a larger $150 million investment plan by the Government of the Northwest Territories to improve housing across the region. These funds are being used over three years to address the ongoing need for quality social housing in local communities.
