On March 2, 2026, Housing NWT released a report that shows exactly where more homes are needed in Hay River, Northwest Territories. The territorial government is using this information to ask the federal government for funding to help build and repair houses across the region.
Minister Lucy Kuptana said the report found that single people and seniors are the two groups most in need of housing. By showing these specific needs, officials hope to secure the money required for new construction and home repairs.
Work is already moving forward on a new 30-unit building for single residents in Hay River. The Government of the Northwest Territories finished taking construction bids for this apartment project on January 12, 2026.
The territory is also updating its rules to help more people own their homes. They are expanding a program that forgives older government mortgages to make it easier for local residents to stay in their houses.
To help people with immediate needs, an emergency shelter continues to operate through a partnership with the Hay River Committee for Persons with Disabilities. This facility provides a safe place for residents while larger building projects are being completed.
