Residents and businesses in Hay River, Northwest Territories, will experience a brief planned power outage on March 11, 2026. The Northwest Territories Power Corporation has arranged the interruption to complete work on the local electricity system.
The outage is expected to last for 30 minutes, beginning at 3:00 PM and ending at 3:30 PM. This short break in service will affect people living in both Hay River and Fort Smith while crews perform technical work on the regional power grid.
This work is a necessary step to bring the Taltson Hydroelectric Facility back into full operation. The facility has been offline for a major overhaul since 2023, which forced the community to rely on backup diesel generators for nearly two years.
The utility provider expects the hydro plant to be fully running by the end of March 2026. Moving back to hydroelectric power is intended to reduce the region’s reliance on expensive diesel fuel once the final technical updates are finished.
Residents should prepare for a temporary loss of heating, lights, and electronics during the half-hour outage. The Northwest Territories Power Corporation advises customers to check their website for the most current information regarding service interruptions.
