According to Environment Canada, Monday will be mainly sunny with a high of 25 degrees. Tuesday will be cloudy before some afternoon clearing, still reaching 28 degrees. Wednesday through Sunday will be sunny with highs climbing from 31 degrees on Wednesday to 33 degrees Thursday through Saturday, then dipping to 31 degrees on Sunday.
Overnight lows will settle between 12 and 18 degrees, making for comfortable evenings. The UV index is expected to sit at 8, or “very high,” throughout the week. Residents heading to the dog park or out to the coulees should make sure to slap on some sunscreen.
This kind of July weather is typical for southern Alberta’s semi-arid climate. The month is Lethbridge’s warmest, with average highs around 26 degrees and little rain. This year, things are looking better than in recent summers when drought was a big concern. Alberta Environment and Protected Areas reports that major river basins, including the Oldman River, are now at Stage 0, meaning no drought conditions. That’s a welcome change after a wet June helped crops and pastures across the region.
Anyone with outdoor plans this week should have an easy go of it. The city has events like Tanabata Natsu Matsuri on July 26, and the Cornstock Festival runs July 23 to 25 in nearby Taber. The forecast lines up well for people looking to take in some local culture or just fire up the grill in the backyard.
