Mount Pearl parents with children in minor hockey must complete a new online course before the 2026-27 season begins or their child could be ineligible to play. The Mount Pearl Minor Hockey Association has posted the Hockey Canada requirement that at least one parent or guardian per registered player finish The Shift Forward: Evolving Hockey Culture program.
The new course replaces the old Respect in Sport Parent Program. It costs $11.50 plus processing fees and takes about 89 minutes to finish. Parents can sign up through the Hockey Canada Registry/Spordle platform. The course covers topics like hockey culture, being an active bystander, how to have crucial conversations, autonomy, individual rights, grooming and consent.
HockeyNL says the courses opened on July 2, 2026, and the parent program must be done by the start of the hockey season. Any family that has not completed the course risks their child’s registration not being finalized. The association’s office at Glacier 1 in the Robert Hillier Volunteer Centre is open to help with registration and direct parents to the course portal. Staff can be reached at (709) 364-5352 or [email protected] during weekday office hours, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
For families who need help covering registration costs, the association has posted links to funding programs like Jumpstart, KidSport, the Breakaway Foundation, the Hockey Canada Foundation Assist Fund and the Grindstone Award Foundation. Parents should contact the office or visit the association’s website for more information on those options.
