The Niverville Nighthawks are preparing to host the McMunn & Yates Turnbull Cup Final, marking the first championship appearance in the franchise’s history. The best-of-seven series against the Virden Oil Capitals begins this Friday, April 17, 2026, at the Niverville Community Resource & Recreation Centre.
The Nighthawks head into the final following a dominant regular season where they posted a league-best 51-6-1 record. This performance earned the team 103 points and the highest number of wins for a Manitoba Junior Hockey League team since the COVID-19 pandemic. To reach the final round, the Nighthawks swept the Winkler Flyers and defeated the Waywayseecappo Wolverines in five games.
Their opponents, the Virden Oil Capitals, secured their spot in the final after finishing first in the West Division with a 39-14-5 record. In the playoffs, Virden swept the Neepawa Titans before moving past the Steinbach Pistons in six games. Virden has organized a fan bus to help boost attendance for the opening game in Niverville.
The series will feature a matchup between two standout goaltenders. Niverville’s Austin Dubinsky enters the final after a strong regular season and a playoff run that includes back-to-back shutouts, having gone over 165 minutes without allowing a goal. Virden’s Braxton Burdeny has been effective, maintaining an 8-0 record throughout the playoffs.
Offensively, both teams feature top scorers heading into the championship. Virden forward Bryce Bryant currently leads the league in playoff scoring with 19 points, while Niverville forward Adam Vigfusson has contributed nine goals during the postseason.
The opening game takes place on April 17 at 7:30 p.m. Following the series opener, Game 2 moves to Tundra Oil & Gas Place on April 19. The series returns to Niverville for Game 3 on April 21, with Game 4 held in Virden on April 23. If the series continues, additional games are scheduled for April 25, 27, and 29.
