Norway House, Manitoba, will host the first week of the 2026 Manitoba Indigenous Summer Games from July 8 to July 12, 2026. The Norway House Cree Nation Parks & Recreation Division is organizing the event, which was originally set for 2025 but was delayed because of wildfires across the province.
The five-day event will bring young athletes together for several different sports, including volleyball, wrestling, and 3-on-3 basketball. There will also be traditional competitions such as York Boat races, canoe races, and archery, as well as a 10,000-metre foot race.
These games are open to First Nations, Métis, and Inuit youth from across the region. According to the Manitoba Aboriginal Sports & Recreation Council, the goal of the event is to celebrate heritage and encourage sports among young people.
Edward Sonny Albert will serve as the manager for the week of activities in the community. While the summer event is still a few months away, local facilities in Norway House Cree Nation are already busy with regular programming like indoor pickleball sessions for residents.
