Young hockey players from Norway House recently competed in Winnipeg at the 36th Annual Manitoba Indigenous Cultural Education Centre (MICEC) Indigenous Minor Hockey Tournament. The competition, which began March 27 and concluded March 29, 2026, took place at the Scotiabank Hockey for All Centre.
The event is a major gathering for Indigenous youth sports in the province, drawing more than 5,000 players and supporters each spring. The tournament hosts divisions for youth from age seven up to age 18, with female divisions organized based on the number of teams registered. The event is sponsored by CBC Manitoba.
Norway House has a well-established reputation at the tournament. In 2025, the community saw the Norway House North Stars take home championships in both the U18 and U9 divisions. Those wins featured standout performances from players like MVP Chase Braun and goaltender Seth Muswagon in the U18 category, and MVP Bryce Bell in the U9 category.
The Norway House Minor Hockey Association, led by President Drew Packo and Secretary, Registrar, and Referee-In-Chief George Cromarty, oversees the youth programs that feed into these competitive teams. Norway House, a community of approximately 9,400 registered members located on the banks of the Nelson River, maintains a strong local hockey culture. In addition to the youth programs, the community is home to the Norway House North Stars, a long-standing Junior B team, and the Norway House Bruins, a senior men’s team that has seen success in regional tournaments.
