Oshawa residents can join a region-wide curbside swap on Saturday, June 13, 2026, as Durham Region brings back its Curbside Giveaway Day. From 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., anyone in Durham can put out unwanted but usable household items clearly marked as “Free” for others to pick up. Organizers call it a community treasure hunt that keeps useful stuff out of the landfill.
The event is run by Durham Region together with local municipalities, and all eight area communities are on board this time. That includes Oshawa, which sat out the first pilot in 2023 but now takes part. Andrew Evans, the Region’s Director of Waste Management, has pointed out that with household budgets tight, giving things away helps neighbours while controlling disposal costs.
People are free to browse curbs for books, small furniture, toys, tools, kitchen gear, or anything else in working order. But safety rules apply: baby items like car seats and cribs are not allowed for safety reasons, nor are mattresses because of bedbug concerns. Broken furniture, chemicals, and anything dangerous or illegal should stay off the curb.
By 7 p.m., residents must bring any leftover items back indoors. The Region warns that anything left out afterward could trigger a bylaw visit, so it pays to have a backup plan like donating to charity, giving to a local thrift shop, or posting them on a free site such as Kijiji, VarageSale or Facebook Marketplace.
The giveaway is part of Durham’s push toward a circular economy, aiming to rethink waste before it hits the curb on garbage day. A second giveaway is already scheduled for September 19, 2026, giving locals another shot to share what they no longer need.
