The Oshawa Public Library Board of Trustees will meet on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at the McLaughlin Branch in Oshawa, Ontario, to discuss how the library will operate under a new funding freeze. The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. and comes after library officials warned that a zero per cent increase in the city budget could lead to cuts in service hours and community programs.
The City of Oshawa proposed a 2026 budget that provides no extra money for library operations compared to the previous year. Board chair Eric Guernsey and CEO Frances Newman have stated that this is effectively a budget cut because the cost of running the library rises with inflation. Trustee Jim Clapp has previously noted that these financial pressures could lead to fewer resources or staff at its four branches.
The meeting will take place in the boardroom of the McLaughlin Branch, which is located at 65 Debwewin Miikan. The street was renamed from Bagot Street in 2024 to support local reconciliation efforts and remove the name of a person linked to residential schools. Residents can attend the meeting in person to hear how the board plans to manage high-tech makerspaces and social programs despite the current funding limits.
Agendas for the meeting are required to be posted on the library website at least 48 hours before the session begins. This gives the public a chance to review the planned topics and speak up about any decisions that might change how they use their local library throughout 2026.
