Owen Sound, Ontario, is now selling camping and boating permits for the 2026 Salmon Spectacular fishing derby, giving residents and visitors a chance to secure on-site spots for the 10-day event that brings more than 50,000 people to the harbourfront each year.
Fish Derby Camping permits cost $150 per vehicle, plus HST, and allow camping in designated areas from noon on Wednesday, August 26, to noon on Monday, September 7, 2026. The derby itself runs from Friday, August 28, at 12:01 a.m. through Sunday, September 6, at noon.
To get a camping permit, you must be registered for the Salmon Spectacular. Derby tickets are $30 for a single registration or $70 for a family, with prizes totalling more than $175,000 up for grabs. The City of Owen Sound is limiting camping permits to 23 spots along the inner harbour – seven on the west side and 16 on the east side. More camping is available at Georgian Shores Marina and the West Side Boat Launch, each accommodating up to 25 vehicles. Boat launch day passes are $12.39 plus HST, and a season pass valid until October costs $111.50 plus HST.
This is the second year for the Fish Derby Camping permit system, introduced in 2025 to manage garbage, safety, and crowd challenges that had built up in past years. The permit fee helps cover city costs for waste bins, washrooms, and by-law enforcement. Camping outside designated areas can bring a $300 fine.
The derby is organized by the Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association, a volunteer conservation group that has run the event for more than 35 years. The festival generates about $2.8 million in economic impact locally and supports the association’s hatchery work, which stocks over 160,000 salmonids in Georgian Bay each year. Permits and derby tickets are available now through the City of Owen Sound.
