Residents of Owen Sound and four nearby Grey County municipalities can safely get rid of household hazardous waste this Saturday, July 11, 2026, at the City of Owen Sound Public Works Facility at 1900 20th Street East. The free drop-off event runs from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and helps keep dangerous materials out of landfills and local waterways.
This is the fourth of eight planned waste collection days in 2026. The service is open to residents of Owen Sound, Chatsworth, Georgian Bluffs, Grey Highlands, and Meaford. Anyone bringing materials will need valid identification showing a home address in one of these communities, plus a completed Hazardous Waste Report Form available on the city’s website.
Accepted items include paint, batteries, motor oil, antifreeze, pesticides, propane tanks, household cleaners, gasoline, and fluorescent light bulbs. All rechargeable and nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cad) batteries must be taped or bagged before drop-off. For other batteries, taping the ends or bagging is recommended as a safety precaution. Containers larger than 20 litres (5 gallons) will not be accepted, and used containers will not be returned.
The city cannot take infectious waste like syringes, radioactive materials, explosives or ammunition, unmarked containers, leaking containers, empty containers, or any hazardous waste from commercial, industrial, or farm operations. The program is designed to protect public health and the environment, and city officials note that hazardous waste cannot legally be collected outside of these scheduled events.
