More than 50 students from across the region gathered in Owen Sound, Ontario, on February 27, 2026, to demonstrate their skills in the annual Regional Technological Skills Challenge. The event gave local high schoolers a chance to prove their abilities in several different career paths, ranging from construction to personal services.
Participants from six local schools competed at the Sydenham Campus, Georgian College, and Owen Sound District Secondary School. The competition included hands-on tasks in specific areas such as precision machining, electrical work, and welding. Some students also tested their talents in hairstyling or worked together in the two-person carpentry category.
The event was hosted by the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) with support from the Bluewater District School Board and the Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board. This challenge serves as a qualifying stage for top performers to earn a spot in provincial-level competitions hosted by Skills Ontario.
By practicing their trades in a professional setting, these students are preparing for future jobs in the local workforce. The challenge highlights the technical training happening in area high schools and helps connect young people with the local skilled trades job market.
