The Pembroke Fire Department is encouraging residents to prepare for local emergencies as part of Emergency Preparedness Week, which runs from May 3 to May 9, 2026. With regional risks including ice storms, windstorms, flooding, and extreme heat, the department is emphasizing that local safety starts with individual planning.
Coordinated by Public Safety Canada and the Ontario Ministry of the Solicitor General, this year’s initiative carries the national theme of Be Prepared. Know Your Risks, and the provincial theme of Prepared Together. The focus is on community collaboration and ensuring that households remain self-sufficient for at least 72 hours following an emergency.
The Pembroke Fire Department recently practiced for potential crises by holding a mock emergency exercise in April 2026, which simulated an ammonia leak at the Pembroke Memorial Centre involving local students and hospital staff.
Residents are encouraged to create a family emergency plan and assemble a kit containing necessary supplies to last three days. For more information or to speak with local fire officials, residents can visit the department at 200 International Dr. or call 613-735-6821, extension 1201.
