Ponoka residents can look forward to a stretch of sunny, warm weather this week after a weekend of smoky skies and thunderstorm risk. Environment Canada shows no alerts in effect for the area as of Monday, August 24, 2026, with Ponoka recording 21°C at 1:00 p.m. under partly cloudy conditions.
The week ahead brings clearing skies and climbing temperatures. Tuesday is expected to reach 25°C with a humidex of 27 and a UV index of 6 or high. Wednesday will warm to 29°C, and Thursday is forecast to hit 30°C under sunny skies, making for ideal late-summer conditions for outdoor activities around town.
This stretch of calm weather comes after a summer of wildfire smoke and an unusually active severe storm season across Alberta. Fire smoke from northern Saskatchewan prompted air quality advisories for Ponoka and Central Alberta in late June and July. Additionally, Alberta has recorded 27 tornadoes this summer, more than double the annual average of 11.2, along with large hail and damaging winds.
The good conditions will not last all week. A return of unsettled weather is predicted for Saturday, August 29, with a 60 percent chance of showers and a high of 18°C. Residents are encouraged to enjoy the warm stretch while it lasts.
Ponoka is also on the list for new provincial flood hazard mapping within 2026-2027. According to Alberta’s flood mapping program, the updated maps will guide local emergency response plans and development decisions. The town sits along the Battle River, and its previous flood hazard study was completed in October 1994.
