Construction is officially underway on a new Save-On-Foods grocery store on George Hills Way in the Cow Bay area, after Jim Pattison Developments received its building permit and broke ground on September 2, 2026.
The City of Prince Rupert congratulated the developer on the milestone, noting the store represents a substantial private-sector investment in the community. Once complete, the store will be operated by Pattison Food Group, a sister division within the Jim Pattison Group.
Mayor Herb Pond called the project a sign of confidence in the city’s future. “This is transformational change that people can see happening in their community,” Pond said. “Breaking ground on the new Save-On-Foods is about much more than one development; it is a sign of confidence in Prince Rupert and the direction our community is heading.”
David Bell, President of Jim Pattison Developments, echoed that sentiment. “We have been proud to be part of the Prince Rupert community for many years, and we are thrilled to reach this milestone and begin construction on the new Save-On-Foods. This project reflects our confidence in this community and its future, and we look forward to delivering a store that will make Prince Rupert proud,” Bell said.
The new store is another step in the continued development of the Cow Bay area. The city has been working on infrastructure improvements, including extending 3rd Avenue East to reconnect with George Hills Way for safety and future development. No opening date has been announced.
