The Waskasoo Environmental Education Society invites Red Deer, Alberta residents to help clean up the river valley during a free community event on Sunday, June 7, 2026.
Volunteers can arrive at the Kerry Wood Nature Centre (6300 45 Avenue) between noon and 1:00 PM. No registration is needed to take part in the Green Deer River Valley Cleanup, which runs until 3:00 PM.
Participants of all ages and abilities are welcome to pick up litter along the Red Deer River. The nature centre provides garbage bags, disposable gloves, first aid kits, and garbage grabbers. Volunteers should bring their own weather-appropriate clothing, closed-toe shoes, hat, water bottle, sunscreen, and bug spray.
After the cleanup, everyone returns to the Kerry Wood Nature Centre between 2:00 and 3:00 PM to hand in route maps, receive certificates, enjoy light refreshments, and collect raffle tickets. A prize raffle follows shortly after 3:00 PM.
The event is part of the broader Green Deer environmental program and comes right after the spring cleanup campaign wrapped up on May 31. It is sponsored by NOVA Chemicals, INEOS Canada Partnership, Friends of the Kerry Wood Nature Centre, and The City of Red Deer.
Past cleanups have made a big difference—in 2018, 150 volunteers removed about 1,200 pounds of garbage from the river valley.
The Waskasoo Environmental Education Society is a registered non-profit charity founded in 2008 that runs programs at the Kerry Wood Nature Centre, Fort Normandeau, and Waskasoo Park.
