The Red Deer Symphony Orchestra is marking its 40th anniversary in Red Deer with the release of its 2026-27 season brochure, which the organization calls its most ambitious lineup in years. To celebrate this milestone, the orchestra is presenting a special concert on May 30, 2026, featuring the music of composer Hans Zimmer at the Red Deer Polytechnic Arts Centre.
The upcoming performance will showcase scores from well-known films such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Interstellar, and The Dark Knight Trilogy. Sponsored by Servus Credit Union, tickets for the concert are available for purchase between $45.46 and $68.19.
Founded in 1987 with an initial grant from Royal Canadian Legion Branch #35, the orchestra stands as the only professional ensemble of its kind in Central Alberta. The group operates as a registered charity with an annual budget exceeding $500,000. In late 2024, the organization secured stable footing when city council approved $47,000 in annual operational funding, resolving a long-standing issue regarding municipal support.
The orchestra continues to be led by Music Director Claude Lapalme, who has served in the position since 1990. His 36-year tenure at the podium makes him one of the longest-serving music directors of a professional symphony orchestra in Canada.
