A free community barbecue to celebrate Canada Day will now take place on July 4 in Nordegg, after forecasted rain pushed the event back a week. Clearwater County invites everyone to the Nordegg Discovery Centre at 4002 Stuart Street for food, fun, and games starting at noon.
Originally planned for June 27, the barbecue was rescheduled to keep the gathering comfortable and enjoyable for the whole family. The county posted the new date online, citing wet weather in the forecast for the original weekend.
The Nordegg Discovery Centre is open daily from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm throughout the summer season. Once a schoolhouse, the building now serves as a visitor hub where people can learn about the area’s mining past and pick up local information. It is also the meeting point for tours of the nearby Brazeau Collieries Historic Mine Site.
Clearwater County is a rural municipality of about 12,278 residents, covering a large area of Alberta’s foothills. Nordegg itself was founded in 1914 as a coal mining community and once had nearly 3,000 people living there. The mine closed in 1955, but the hamlet has since become a destination for mountain recreation and heritage tourism.
