Jason Colon has been officially sworn in as the Chief of Police for the Manitoba First Nations Police Service, bringing permanent leadership to the agency after a year-long transition. The swearing-in ceremony took place on April 14, 2026, at the newly built headquarters located at the Waywayseecappo Convention Centre near Brandon, Manitoba.
Chief Colon had served as the interim chief since January 2025, following the sudden death of former Chief Doug Palson. After a national search process, Colon was selected as the chief designate in September 2025 before stepping into the permanent role this April.
The Manitoba First Nations Police Service provides policing for 12 communities, including Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation. Chief Colon brings over 28 years of law enforcement experience to the position, having previously served with the Winnipeg Police Service, the Blood Tribe Police Service, and the Dakota Ojibway Police Service. He holds a Master of Executive Police Leadership and a Bachelor of Policing from Charles Sturt University.
During the ceremony, Manitoba Justice Minister Matt Wiebe commended the appointment, noting that Colon is the right person to lead the service with fairness and integrity. Chief Colon has outlined a vision for the force that emphasizes modern, community-based policing rooted in compassion and cultural awareness, with plans to work toward expanding the service to additional communities.
