The Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) is hosting an information session on March 11, 2026, to help citizens from its member nations, including families from Sandy Bay, find records and access support related to residential schools. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Turtle Island Neighbourhood Centre in Winnipeg.
This session is part of the Residential School Research Project, an ongoing program to support survivors and their families. Participants can receive guidance on the “My Records, My Choice” campaign and get help searching for records from various archives, including churches, the Hudson’s Bay Company, and government records held at Library and Archives Canada.
Support staff will be available to help people fill out claim forms, such as those for the Federal Indian Hospital Settlement. The session is also designed to help families find information about relatives who attended day schools or stayed in tuberculosis hospitals and other medical facilities.
The Southern Chiefs’ Organization represents 33 Anishinaabe and Dakota Nations in southern Manitoba, including the Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation. This project aims to give survivors and their descendants the tools they need to research their own history and the legacy of their family members.
