An officer with the Manitoba First Nations Police Service was injured on May 22, 2026, when a stolen truck slammed into a patrol car in Sandy Bay First Nation. The crash happened early in the morning and left the cruiser so badly damaged it could not be driven. The officer was treated at a hospital.
The trouble began shortly before 5:00 a.m. when Sandy Bay First Nation safety officers reported that a vehicle had tried to run them off the road. Police later found what turned out to be a stolen truck and tried to stop it.
When the police vehicle pulled up behind, the driver suddenly reversed at high speed, crashing into the cruiser. The truck then fled the scene, and the suspect is still not identified.
Police are urging anyone with information to call the Sandy Bay detachment at 204-843-7705 or the anonymous MFNPS TIPS line at 1-833-978-0048. Tips from the public can help track down the person responsible.
The incident comes as MFNPS is working to improve safety across the 12 First Nations it serves, including a new Crime Reduction and Enforcement Unit launched in March 2026 that focuses on gangs, drugs, and illegal guns. Police say community cooperation is key to tackling violence in the area.
