Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Sherwood Park, warning of strong, potentially damaging winds expected to develop on the morning of Thursday, May 14, 2026. The alert, which includes the greater Edmonton region, warns of wind gusts reaching 80 to 100 km/h throughout the day before conditions begin to weaken in the evening.
The severe weather is caused by an intense low pressure system moving across the province. In addition to high winds, the system is expected to bring rainfall of up to 30 mm by Friday morning. The weather agency notes that driving conditions will likely be very difficult, and high-sided vehicles could be overturned by the wind.
Residents are encouraged to prepare for potential disruptions to transportation, services, and utilities. Property owners should also take steps to secure loose objects, as damage to roofs, fences, tree branches, and soft shelters is considered likely. This weather event covers a wide area stretching from east of Edmonton to Lloydminster in the north, and down to near Vulcan and Medicine Hat in the south.
This storm follows a history of significant wind events in the region. A similar severe windstorm in May 2025 resulted in gusts of 129 km/h in the Edmonton area, which was the second-strongest wind event recorded since 1965. During that storm, Sherwood Park experienced significant impacts, including fallen trees on homes, vehicles, and fences.
