Sidney, BC is in for a wet start to the week before skies clear and temperatures climb well above normal, according to Environment Canada. Light rain is falling across the region this morning, with periods of rain continuing through tonight. The rain should ease by Tuesday morning, making way for a string of sunny days that will push the mercury to a high of 26°C by Saturday.
As of 10:00 a.m. Monday, the weather station at Victoria International Airport recorded light rain and 12°C. Periods of rain are forecast to continue through the day, with a high of 15°C. Overnight, winds will pick up out of the west, gusting to 50 km/h and up to 70 km/h near the Juan de Fuca Strait. A gale warning is in effect for the strait, with west winds rising to 35 knots early Tuesday morning before easing in the evening. Boaters and anyone with outdoor plans near the water should take care.
Tuesday stays mostly cloudy with a 60 percent chance of showers and a high of 16°C, but the real change starts Wednesday. Sunny skies will take over and hold right through the weekend. Highs will climb steadily: 18°C Wednesday, 21°C Thursday, 22°C Friday, then a warm 26°C Saturday and 28°C Sunday. That is nearly 10 degrees above the normal June high of 19°C for Sidney.
For locals, it means a soggy Monday can give way to weekend barbecues, beach walks, and gardening without the rain gear. The long June days help, too. Sunrise today was at 5:12 a.m. and sunset is not until 9:14 p.m., so there is plenty of daylight to enjoy once the weather turns. After a slow start to the week, Sidney looks set for a classic early-summer stretch.
