The Saanich Peninsula Lions Food Bank in Sidney, British Columbia, continues to offer online donation and virtual food drive options to help meet sustained high demand. The organization currently serves approximately 500 families every month, a figure that represents a 20 per cent increase from 2023 levels as local households navigate rising costs.
Neighbours can give through the food bank’s direct CanadaHelps portal or participate in a virtual food drive. These digital options provide a 24/7 alternative to in-person drop-offs at the physical office in Iroquois Park, where donation hours are limited to weekdays between 8:00 AM and 2:00 PM. These expanded giving methods are particularly vital during holiday closures and for donors unable to visit during standard business hours.
The food bank, located at 9586 Fifth St., relies heavily on community generosity. While the organization is primarily community-supported, it has also received significant one-time municipal grants, such as $100,000 from the District of Central Saanich, to help maintain services. Executive Director Bev Elder noted that the support is critical as the team provides fresh produce and dairy during specialized sessions held every Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. These updates ensure the food bank can continue to provide for the Saanich Peninsula community despite the growing needs of local families.
