Residents in Sidney, British Columbia, will have a front-row seat to a rare total lunar eclipse that will turn the moon a deep red during the early morning hours of Tuesday, March 3, 2026. This “Blood Moon” is expected to be visible across the community if skies remain clear, as the moon enters the shadow of the Earth.
According to data from Time and Date, the total eclipse will begin at 3:04 AM. The moon will reach its deepest red colour at 3:33 AM, and the event will last for nearly an hour before the moon begins to move out of the shadow.
This event is significant because it is the final total lunar eclipse visible from North America for more than two years. Experts at Space note that another one will not happen until the end of December 2028.
Forecasts from Environment Canada suggest clear skies for much of the night, though fog patches may develop near the water toward sunrise. The Weather Network recommends that residents who head outside should dress for overnight temperatures that are expected to dip toward 5°C.
Local spots like Tulista Park or the Sidney Waterfront Walkway are ideal for viewing because they offer clear views of the western horizon. No special equipment or telescopes are needed to see the moon change colour with the naked eye.
